Title: 95 Vulcan Make Over
Post by: RandyRocks77 on March 17, 2013, 11:33:15 pm
Well guys I started working on my winter project.. I got my Bike back in September via a trade... it has a lot I don't like about it and I plan on buying a new or new to me bike with in a year.. so I want to try some Mods and play around with this Bike.  I have zero experience.. other than shop class in high school... lets say that was 18 years ago.  I started with the side panels, because if I screw them up they are cheaper to replace.. I sanded till my arm about fell off... I may get one or two days off a month so this will be a long process!!

So far nice job.  What size bike is it? Looks like you are well on your way to knocking this stuff out.

That sanding job looks great, I always like to rub them down with alcohol when finished sanding to get all impurities out.  I usually like to wet sand everything after each coat.  I like to go with a 1500 grit paper and water hose.  Doesn't take much.  You just want to get any splatters off and it will make the color and clear coat much more brilliant and glossy.  It does take a little longer, but well worth the effort.  Duplicolor auto paint at Wally World works great.  Also use a great primer, Duplicolor or such.  Hope this helps a little.  If you need anything let us know.

can i go with primer or will I have to use the plastic fusion stuff to make sure it sticks?

You could use the plastic stuff.  I find it takes a lot more sanding for a smooth finish.  When I sand plastic to the point you have it I come back over it with a rough sand to really rough it up.  The primer takes to it well and after the second coat of primer and a fast wet sand you will see the time it saves and money as well.  If you already have the fusion go ahead and use it, just pay special attention to the finish sanding product before starting with the color.  Either way take your time and do not rush.  A great home done job takes me about 3 to 5 days weather permitting.  I never paint in High humidity.  It just takes some of the sheen away from the finished product.  Never paint when it is raining.  I like temps to be around 75 to 85 degrees.  That is optimal for a great cure on every coat.  If you get any runs a wet sand will take it out with out taking away to much paint and will blend it well.

no real new updates... I did primer the side panels ... gonna wet sand them and go over it again.... still really thinking about sending the tank through my Powder coat both at work... also since I have the 81 KZ ... I was thinking about turning this into a Bobber and giving it to my oldest son... he's only 10 but at this rate it'll take me 5 years to get looking the way I really want it to

I would but doubt that there is a market for a Vulcan 500 with the tank off (sanded down) primer side panels... a bike in a box... but hey it was running when I parked it :)

Never. My six year girl will try her best to help daddy on it. Kill the power to the house or his room for that matter and tell him u had to call an electrician and see if he decides to help u then.
