z1000 636 swap
« on: August 19, 2012, 06:59:47 am »
Alright guys found out last night about the lower triple shaft. You can press the Z's out and press it into a 05 636 lower triple for sure. This is one of the things me and curt didn't know and could not find any info on. So now if you want to run the 636 triples you can and should not have any issues with the spanner nuts. I have seen several forums with post that say they just used the 636 triples up  and lower but were only able to install one nut. ( ummm... that is a little scary). Keep everyone updated if when find anything.g else that hasn't been tried. :21

Nice find, so can you just put the 636 forks into the Z triples? Our or do you have to swap the whole front?

You can just bolt the 636 forks right up without having to do that. But if you find your self in his situation with a bad triple tgen its a lot easier to find the zx10 or 636. And a lot cheaper!

About a hundred bucks cheaper. Also loose about a pound off the forks

Well got bad news.went to install the lower triple with my upper z triple. Can't be done. The z has less of a sweep back on them so the forks want slide up.have to use the 636 top and lower together. Doing this though there are a few things that want work. Your ignition will not lock. Shitty!! You will have to run clip ons only one bolt for the bottom bracket for the fairings will be able to be used. Also will have to make one for the top to bolt and it will only be one as well., that's where I've got so far will post pics later.

Dang it. I will be up late tonight so I can help out a bit. That the thing with trying out things like this. No instructions, just have a trail and error. Hopefully we will be able to use the clip ons in a so.e what normal position for you.

Yep. I already slid the clip ons  up. Was able to get the bracket bolted to the bottom triple but since there's only one hole I only have one. Think I can make a little bracket for top to bolt using the 636 wire guide that was on it with a couple bends. But want you to look at the starter switch. The z looks to be rivoted on. While the 636 is bolt on. If I drill it out I. An bolt it but do not want to drill and it not be a rivot.lol also the brake master plastic cup is broken. Don't know where to get one

Well got most together and found out since I'm using the 636 trees that I now had to order spacers for the wheel to fit right. Fml. Calipers came n and had new pads. Bout time something went good. Can't find the insert for master so I will have to make the original work for now. If I think about it later I will put some pics up to show

ok, so I been looking at fleabay and such for front end parts for my Z, I want to keep my handlebars sooo, that means I can just use 636 forks, calipers, and rotors? and master cylinder? I would like to avoid the clip-ons if possible, does that mean I have to come up with a way to mount the master cyl. and use custom length brake lines?.  Reason I ask is I may just start buying pieces here and there as I get the $ and as they are available, I found pretty good deals on some calipers and forks, not so much luck on the master cyl. though

Custom lines are unnecessary. you can use your lines. You don't have to change out your triples at all. Thus keeping your stock bars. You will need Forks, calipers, axle, spacers,
you can use your master cylinder. Although I would strongly recommend the 636 radial master. and steel braided brake lines. Also stick with all 05-06 636 arts as well. it will be a bit easier for what you are wanting to do. this will keep it all as just bolt up without having any modding. and any master cylinder on the 636 from 03-present will work.
Also I posted in the Parts Interchange list my Z Interchange parts list. May be helpful...

No jeff, no wheel, all are from 2 different sellers, I've seen cheaper forks, these were 225, with complete tree, I'm sure I could find a better price w/just forks but these were pictured w/run-out gauge
