James, I built my Busa on a $12,000 budget. It was in Super Streetbike Mag. and won 2nd place at the 2008 Mid Ohio superbike show... And I rode it there, with 8500 mi on it since the build.... It wouldn't take anywhere near $25,000 to do a world class build on a KZ ......

I wonder what they are using to build those that costs so much?, they must be using alot of hand made  parts, looks like theres about 5grand in brakes/suspension, maybe 5 grand in wheels, are those high dolar carbs?

I have built some pretty sick bikes myself. I think with the right tooling, money, and time several of us could build some sic bikes. Now what we need is a money backer and customers to pay the prices of doing things like this and we will be set doing what we love. haha

Fellas, I got to see the Japanese custom bike scene for 10 years and trust me, those guys are in a league of their own.  And, I promise, the Japanese riders think nothing of dropping serious money into any bike that catches their interest.  I've seen Honda z50 monkey bikes with Ohlins suspension and Brembo brake setups for goodness sake! It's fairly normal for average owners of bikes like Suzuki GSX1100S's (the original Katana) to hang Ohlins suspension ($2000 for rear shocks), better brakes (c. $2000), custom rear set pegs ($1500), a nice earl's oil cooler kit ($750-1000), and a titanium exhaust system ($2000) to their normal daily driver.  If they want to go further then they could add carbon fibre bodywork ($1500 or so), and forged wheels ($3000-4000) and all that's before they've even opened the Yoshimura catalog which is where things really start to get expensive.

Imagine motorcycles built by detail obsessed Asians with a lavish budget and for whom anything less than perfection is failure.

Yeah.

But the bikes are wonderful.     :)

Unicorn in Japan is a company specializing in the GSX1100S.  Here's the webpage showing what they build.  Use the buttons at the bottom of the page to see the different versions.  They also add Katana bodywork to GSF1200 Bandits and GSX1400's to make the bikes Suzuki could have been making now.

Yes Chris, and a few of us, including your son Ian, I think. Are fully capable of the same builds as these obsessed Asians you speak of. And have done the very same builds you speak of (suspension upgrades, one-off billet everything, billet custom made wheels, custom one off paint colors/jobs,better brakes, custom billet rear sets, Ti exhausts, Yosh parts ....ect...ect ......) .... It's not only them that are detail and perfection obsessed you know .......give us some credit over here too Chris ....
