mod ideas, Boat engine cover
« on: March 17, 2013, 03:43:25 pm »
The aft engine cover on my boat had to be completely rebuilt and I finally finished it except mounting the 75" long hinge.  Id like to make it completely removable for engine access.   Any ideas !!!!! are welcome.  Im thinking some kind of spring load to hold it in place..  2-4 points, down n back. Be able to lift 6" n reach in to disconnect the hold downs.

Problem is I want it to loook neat not redneck engineered.  eyehooks n bungee cords would be the easy way BUT... too redneck..

anyone got any sugestions...  pics below..

Hard to see on my phone but instead of a traditional hinge why not a clevis pin setup? That'd make removal easy.

I really dont want to put any extra mount holes thru the top cap.  rather put screws in the wood uprights on either side of engine and the cover..

what you need are a set of trunk hinges off of an old early 70's pontiac grand prix. it will all hide underneath mount easily and allow the panel to swing up and completely out of the way. magnets mounted on the bottom of the panel will keep it secured. if i could draw you a picture here it would help. but picture hinges like a j hook. hell go look at the trunk hinges on whatever youre driving for an idea. a flat plate on the bottom of the panel will suffice for the magnetic hold down as long as you have a good stout magnet mounted at the base.
