Valentino Rossi has given himself an ultimatum to be 'closer to the first three' in the first six races next year or to retire from racing in MotoGP at the end of next season.

In a documentary due to be aired in Italy tonight, Sportmediaset have released an extract from Rossi's exclusive interview in "The New Age - A year of MotoGP". The 34-year-old explains: "If I'm here and I want to keep running, I will have to stay ahead in 2014, closer to the first three. From February to June, the test and the first six races will be crucial for deciding whether to continue or stop racing in MotoGP at the end of the season. I'd like to continue for another couple of years, but only if they are competitive."

The sixth race scheduled on the provisional 2014 MotoGP calendar is Rossi's home race in Mugello after which a decision regarding the nine-time World Champions future could be made.

Rossi should have left gracefully a few years ago.  Now he just seems desperate.

He does seam a bit desperate. Bit I feel if he never went to ducati we wouldn't be having this discussion. Ducati really hurt his career.
