  • I might be old, but can mount without help. HA!
Previously asked if any interest in a late OCT or early NOV Ride.

Minimal interest (Marc, Ian, Chris), not sure it is worth the trouble.  ???

I mostly ride anyway, so might as well.  :happypep

Looks like the best time is Sunday, Oct 23, because it seems most work Saturday. Ian's said his work schedule may allow him to ride Sunday, 23rd, but he may not know for sure until the week before. Marc is pretty open to any Sunday. Chris response was would like to, but no bike to ride.

Ian is committed to work this Sunday, Oct 16, and I am tied up Sunday, 29th.  So, we will set it up and see what happens.

Worst Case - Postpone into NOV. -- Drop the idea for Lack of Interest.

MEETUP: Ready to Ride at 8:30AM at McD at Seymour (intersection of Hwy 411/441/338 where 411 turns to west to Maryville). Note: Can top off gas next door at the WEIGEL'S and get BKF Snack at McD if you get there early enough to leave at 8:30AM.

Ride Plan Posted on the other topic. I will copy it from there and post here in a minute. :-)

208 miles 4HR 30 MIN plus 3HR 30 MIN = 8HRS to Mascot RD on 11W East of Blaine.
Pick your route home from Blaine or follow me to Boyds Creek area (near where we started at the  Seymour McD). Another 27 Miles 36MIN

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/36.0959442,-83.7520166/35.9776763,-83.6071344/Zoomerz/@36.0570964,-83.8369889,11z/data=!4m10!4m9!1m0!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x0:0x107fe00b45284f2d!2m2!1d-83.669336!2d35.9174544!3e0

That would be 8HR 45 MIN and 235 miles back to Seymour McD if you follow me. SAY start at 8:30AM, back by 5:30PM (add 30MIN or so for fudge factor) ??? Would be 6:00PM

OK  :happyrider

You know the type roads and how I ride, so hope all is understood.  8)

BTW, not saying I am a hot rod that folks can't keep up with (name ain't Curtie  :-) ,not that Curtie gets crazy on group rides, just saying I can't ride at that level). We will be riding in order to get this done in time for folks to get home before dark - say speed limit or over a bit where road allows.

Most real curvy areas, I am under speed limit for the road (maybe over for the suggested speed on yellow signs). That depends on visibilty around curves and road condition. I like to set speed to be able to see at least  2 seconds (or 3 seconds) ahead on curves.   :happypep

Weather is looking OK for no rain. Cool start 42F and highs in 60s F, I think. Hopefully Fog is not a problem early -- cool morning can cause that I think.

I am concerned about the early start for Marc as he has long travel to get here and sunrise is like 7:45AM. Some light at 7:30AM.

I brought up the subject in a return E mail to Marc this evening. l discussed the issue made a suggestion that maybe could delay start up to 9AM (would make it a bit later getting done with the ride) or meet him when we cross I-40.

My thoughts are that Interstate travel for him would be faster and it would take us nearly 1/2 hour to get to that crossing, so give him more time that way also.

I will investigate a few possibilities and see what Marc thinks.

SO KEEP EYE OUT FOR A TIME CHANGE.

Latest Weather ----  Sunny, 41F low and 57F high. DRESS WARM. Can wear ATGATT  :happyrider

A warmer start would be better.

Nice if warm weather lasted a few more days, but can do without highs of 87F.

Low 70s now for high for me also. Either they changed the one I was looking at or I mis-read it.

oks good, but i dont know if i can hang for the entire ride time.

but i might be able to drop in on the route at some point given the tight schedule that Paul likes to keep ( crack that whip)

and i may be working to appease the wife at that point as i just bought a bike rather than a roof. . . . .

Rick, I tried to answer you when I read the post in the other topic and things hung up. Been having a problem with that. Then I kind of forgot to get back to you with ideas.

Figured best to do a PM (phone numbers) and put it in the latest topic as sort of like to keep the old topic closed since plans are final and it was more of a seeking interest originally topic.

Could set up a meetup if we do it early in the ride. It would get complicated to set a time once approaching Helms Ferry area. By the way - always a chance Helms Ferry will not be running and have to change route which really messes up any time predictions.

SO, it would be best to meet at Rose Hill where I will stop to call the Ferry Dispatch and take a quick break cause that is the last good place to stop for bathroom, etc. once we head for the ferry. Next stop will be at Harrogate (HARDEE's, likely for a quick stop).

Rose Hill is on Hwy 33, south of the new bridge (a Shell Station).

Anyway, call me at Home or  Cell if you want to set something up.

OK Everyone that can see you in AM. Looks like some interference going on and likely just me and Marc doing most of the ride (sad cause the second half starting back from Harrogate is some of the best roads - Hwy 66 and Hwy 31). Couple opportunities to split early after Sneedville. See what time it is when we get there and I can suggest what might be the best split point and route home.

Hwy 25E leads to I-81 to I-40 for those in a hurry to get back and fairly easy to access after Sneedville and a run down Hwy 66, and back east on Spruce Pine RD. Hate tos ee you split that early, but do what you have to do.

I hope to get to McD at 8:00AM and have a snack, coffee.

I enjoyed having you both - good riders (Talking Riders here -- not too many breaks and good speed).

Let Ian stretch hs Triumph out on Muklberry Gap (Hwy 63 over the Mountain into Sneedville) as figured he might be tired of my pace. He took the lead, told him we would mneet him at Sneedville.

Never saw him again until almost in Snedville where he ahd stopped to wait on us.  :happypep :happyrider

I had 197 from Meetup to Splitup ay Baline, TN. I think it was about 3:30PM when we split. So, made good time for the roads we were on. Good thing Helms Ferry was running (barely I think as the ramp at the north side where we departed the Ferry was out of the water). The ferry ramp did not rach the concrete ramp (short about a foot). That resulted in about a foot of heavy large stones for us to cross from ferry ramp to the concrete ramp.

Not too bad a deal, but I had started off at one point and switched to the left edge of the ferry ramp, so I was at an angle. It was a feet down depart for me and glad to gett of with no mishap.  :)

Anyway, after the Splitup at Blaine, I probbaly had about 25 miles to home (maybe 30) as also rode to Betty's Church (Pastor Appreciation Dinner) to meet her (it is on the way home, so no extra miles to the trip).

Add 197 and 30 and 6 miles to meetup this AM = 233 miles (I did not check when I aprked it, so that is a guess).

PS: I took about 150 pictures, edited down to 118 (took me about 3 hours of editing). MIGHT JUST POST ALL OF THEM in PAULRIDE Report. Making memories for Ian & Marc (old roads ran many times for me - but still good memories for today).

PSS: Only bad thing is we never did get hooked up with Rick and his wife.

He called about when we stopped at Rose Hill at about 9:50AM and said he would not make it as it was too cold for his wife (we saw as low as 36F and hadd ice on Burgman Windshield from fog concdenstationthat early in the ride).

I told him we would likely get to Harrogate (Jct 63 and 25E)at about 11AM to 11:15AM and if he got there at 11AM he would for sure see us and he might have to wait 15 minutes. We got there at 11:10AM and did not see him. Ian and Marc added a bit of gas and off we went for Sneedville. Talked to Rick again at Sneedbville (HARDEE'S stop, we got there about 12 NOON) and he was at Harrogate, so about 50 minutes or an hour  behind us.

Discussed maybe meet at Elrod Falls. We spent a about 20 minutes more time at HARDEE'S than I had planned and did  ntot get away from there utnil about 12:50PM. Probably was an hour later getting to Elroid Falls (did not see Rick).  :groan

PICTURES
1) Ice on windshield at temps of 36F per Scooter reading.
2) Ferrry OfF Ramp. Ramp got to within a foot of thre concrete and pushed up some of the ball sized rock. Some places were flat (rock not pushed up and we went off there). Feet down off for me.
PS: As i understand it -- they stop running the Ferry if lake gets down below the concrete ramp too far (nearly there now, so we were lucky to get to go today).
