MotoAmerica at Road Atlanta April 28-30
« on: April 01, 2017, 12:54:27 pm »
The MotoAmerica Series will be racing at Road Atlanta April 28-30. Chris and I are planning on being there the 29th and 30th. Tickets for those two days + pit access run $50. Hotel is currently up in the air as is the travel arrangements. The current loose agenda is to leave on bike (potentially trailer) Saturday morning very early and return Sunday night.

Tickets and information is available here: http://www.roadatlanta.com/motoamerica

This will be my first trip to Road A and a MotoAmerica event so I'm pretty excited.

Ian,

We'll be staying at the somewhat pretentiously named "Best Western Plus Lake Lanier/Gainesville Hotel" which isn't even in Gainesville but rather Oakwood, GA.  I picked it mostly due to it's proximity to the track and so hope it isn't a complete flophouse.  Looks OK on the little computer screen....

Y'know, I was looking at the map and interestingly US129 goes almost directly to the track.  With the IH 85 blockage due to the fire damaged overpass perhaps the US129 route would be better.  Google maps is saying that it would normally take about 30 minutes longer then the main roads as the 129 route is fewer miles but slower.  If the IH85 traffic is snarled by detours then it might be as quick or quicker to take 129 until they get the overpass fixed by the end of the year.

Anybody have experience with taking US129 to Road A?

The 85 collapse is downtown Atlanta. rmRoad A is actually in Braselton so its Northeast of Atlanta so the 85 issue is no worry.      I'm not sure the route we took since Jordan was driving but it was about half backroads and half interstate.

My son lives in Cumming, GA. Had some thoughts about going down and maybe doing one day at track.

Anyway, GOOGLE shows some choices from my house to Road A (screwed up route to an extent).

Generally when I go to his place (MC RIDE), I go by way of Gatlinburg & Cherokee. He lives just south of off of Hwy 20 and close to Hwy 19 and west of I-985. It's the shortest route for me, but takes as long as going around to the west and back over to Cumming.

You bet! The only MotoAmerica round the KTMs don't run is at COTA. He'll practice and have Q1 on Friday,  Q2 and R1 on Saturday, Sunday is Warmup and R2.

The KTM kids be set up for fan walks, signing posters too.

I don't know much (might say know nothing) about these races as have only been to the Antique Days at Birmingham one day during that event.

Questions, I assume:

1) First day FRI Q1 day is a first day to qualify?

2) Second day SAT Q2 day is a second to qualify?

3) Wondering if any one would suggest FRI over SAT of Visa Versa (considering price and events worth seeing)?

4) What would a one day ticket cost bought at gate?

5) where is best place to park and whee is best place to watch the event?

INFO: Thinking of riding to our to Son's either THU or FRI and come home SUN. (maybe stay on his houseboat on Lake Lanier) and probably come home SUN.

That would leave possibility of going to the track FRI or SAT depending on what he wants to do. (THU night and FRI early is his work schedule, so he is off FRI after getting some sleep in AM).

Investigated the web site for the race. Doubt I will go.

I thought about going at least one day (FRI or SAT) and staying with my son or using his House Boat on Lake Lanier. However, I don't think I am interested enough to pay the price. SAT GEN Admission is $30 online if bought by Monday (24th) and I am not committing in advance for weather reasons.

I might if son wanted to on one day (likely have to be a SAT for him).  I don't think he will be interested in a day of MC Racing (doubt I would either).

Paul,

Sorry you're not going.  Having not been at a Road Atlanta event before I can't say what sorts of activities will be going on along with the races so I don't blame you for being cautious.  Usually there are a lot of vendors selling all sorts of motorcycle stuff but I've also been to races where there wasn't much to do while waiting for the racing to happen.  And going to the races always involves a lot of walking around and depending on the weather that can be pretty unfun.

If this event was at Barbers I'd recommend attending since a visit to the museum is always worth it whether you like the racing or not.

We'll make a report when we return and you can make any future attendance decisions with more facts to work with.

Chris

Chris

I did Barber Vintage Event a few years ago  (Vintage Races, Bike Show, etc., and went to the Museum, and rode MC on the road around the track). It was a camp (Van) 4 nights at nearby State park & ride (Hauled MC down behind the Van). I spent the other days exploring the area roads.

By the way - some dang good roads between here and the races in GA (I have rode most of them)

I did enjoy being at the track the one day and riding on the road around the track and all the other stuff going on during Vintage Race Event. The museum was OK also (I am not into that as much as some history buffs and get I got tired of looking at bikes after awhile even though it is an impressive exhibit). Everyone interested in MCs  should see that museum at least one time.

Anyway, I decided it was not worth the money or hassle to do Atlanta. Had it been $10 or something to drop in and look around I would have.   Rather use the money for MC Gas, AMMO, or Shows.  :happypep

Would be fun to have you and Ian come down to Son's Houseboat and take a ride on Lake Lanier (if I were going there and he was willing to take us out). DANG houseboat only goes about 8 MPH, so it's not a thrill ride. It's a 30 foot pontoon with the house part being about like a 25 or 27 foot RV Trailer inside).

Paul, you are correct, Q1 and Q2 are qualifying sessions.

If I had to pick between Fri or Sat, I'd pick Saturday as the are actual races that day.

If you can go Sunday, those tickets are only $10
