Ever have one of those weeks?
« on: September 10, 2017, 07:37:40 pm »
Boy, has my motorcycling mechanical luck turned sour lately.

I went for a ride in late August with Ian and Beth using all of my currently up and running bikes.  During the course of the ride the Beemer developed starting problems...the Honda started running rough...and my old Suzy stopped charging the battery.  OK...the Beemer is charging but only at 13.5 vdc and the battery is old.  The Suzy is charging like crazy (14.2 vdc) but the battery isn't taking a charge.  The Honda seems to run fine at low RPMs but starts stuttering as the revs come up.

After fooling around with them I decided to give the Honda a tune up...set the valves, change spark plugs, balance carbs.  I put the battery from the Honda in the Suzy to use as a troubleshooting aid. While I was at it I noticed the oil level was low and decided to change it.  After changing the oil I noticed there was a leak at the sump drain plug.  While trying to tighten it the bolt stripped the threads in the sump out.  The Beemer regulator seems set too low for modern batteries so I need a new one.

So, after fooling around with everything I need a battery for the Beemer and a voltage regulator (preferably an adjustable one).  The Suzy needs a new battery and a replacement sump cover, which I have on hand, but I'm waiting for a new gasket on back order.  And the Honda needs me to take the time to adjust everything.

But I'm worried about working on it...everything I touch with a wrench lately turns brown and starts to smell bad.

Jeez....

Yay!  My gasket has been shipped.  Time to take the sump cover off of one of my spare engines so it's ready to go when the gasket arrives.   Might as well drop the exhaust off of Suzy too.   Man, the work I manage to make for myself...

I'm thinking the removed cover might be repaired using a rethreading insert like Helicoil or Recoil.  But I wonder if the repair would leak around those new threads since it wouldn't be solid metal around the plug bolt.  Also, the cost of the repair might be more than a replacement cover.   Hmmm.
