Fall riding
« on: November 18, 2017, 12:33:05 am »
I really like this time of year for riding.  The scenery is great, the cool weather makes the bike run fabulous, and you fall in love with your riding gear all over again.  Don't get me wrong, summer is nice.  But when the temps are in the 90s wearing the full motorcycle gear uniform, even when you know how bad you'll need it if you fall, is a very uncomfortable burden.

But now?

Hey, the temps are in the 50s and it feels great to snuggle into the heavy jacket and intermediate gloves and add the thicker wool socks to the boots!

The other night I decided to head out for a ride around midnight and hit a Waffle House for coffee and a piece of pie.  There's something inherently fun about being out riding when everybody else's bike is slumbering in the garage.  That night we were supposed to get our first frost and temps were around 40F and falling so I crawled into the lined canvas coveralls before adding the full jacket and reflector vest.  Once I was all bundled up and the bike warmed enough to shut off the choke I was off.  I was toasty and the old air head Beemer was in it's element, gulping down the cold dense air and running great.  It was a clear, cold night and the stars seemed extra bright as I rode the country roads heading to town.  That new LED headlight bulb Ian gave me was earning its keep and cutting a bright white hole in the night.  Great fun...as a matter of fact, it felt so good that I ended up at a Waffle House in Lenoir City before I stopped for my coffee and pie.  It was a great ride and I made it home just a little before 0300 after covering a little under 100 miles.

Anybody else a fan of late night rides?

Sounds like a nice evening ride. I always heard riding at night was a whole different experience.
